About Us

Johann and Leigh have had 21 years’ experience in the indigenous plant industry in South Africa after co-founding and managing Simply Indigenous Nursery Hartbeespoortdam for 16 years. Simply Indigenous Hartbeespoort was a multiple award winning specialist retail nursery. We were also partners and managers in Penrock Seeds & Plants for 5 years. At the end of 2006, we felt that the time was right to start our own business focusing on the extensive propagation of geophytes in particular indigenous South African bulbs.  Waterwise plants are becoming a necessity in many parts of South Africa and this was also one of the reasons why we decided to stop growing and selling trees, shrubs and groundcovers and focus on bulbs, rhizomes, tubers, geophytes. Please note that we are not associated in any way with the wholesale nursery, Simply Indigenous on the KZN south coast.

The SA Bulb Company is owned by Johann & Leigh (nee Ellis) Nieuwoudt, a husband and wife team who met at university 31 years ago, sharing a mutual love for books, animals, remote places and dreams (some very lofty no doubt) of hiking the length of the ‘foothills’ of the Andes, ‘swimming the Amazon’, trekking through the jungle to the tepuis and living in Patagonia or Brazil. All these years later, we have had some amazing adventures on our travels in Brazil, Mexico and cruising across the south Atlantic but as life usually goes, some dreams materialised, others not………..’yet’, although the love for South America is (for Leigh) as strong as ever and who knows what the future might bring. Being workaholics, the businesses dominated every aspect of our lives for much of the past 2 decades.  Its all about attitude, absolute passion for what you do and believing in yourself despite life’s many challenges. What does the future hold? Books, hopefully 2 or 3 at least and a much anticipated move to the Cape in the very near future where conditions for growing all our beloved winter bulbs will be easier.

Johann has a Masters degree in Sustainable Agriculture from the University of the Free State, a BA degree in Development Studies (Third World Studies) and Anthropology from the University of Johannesburg & he completed 4 year theoretical studies in Nature Conservation from Technikon RSA.   He loves the natural sciences and is of course an avid plantsman with ‘very green fingers’. He served on the executive council of the SA Nursery Association representing indigenous growers & has contributed to gardening programmes in both television & radio as well as print media.

Leigh has an Honours degree in Political Science from the University of Johannesburg. She was a geo-political researcher before joining Johann in the horticulture industry. She has been a lifelong student of global politics with a particular interest in Latin America, is a keen writer with varied interests & ardent supporter of animal rights and wildlife preservation and a bulbaholic of note. She has spent the last 2 decades marketing and administering the companies and was instrumental in developing the very successful export divisions of  all 3 companies.
